Tears Flow Bitterly As Hundreds Of People Turn Out For Footballer, Emiliano Sala's Funeral (Photos)

Emiliano Sala's family wept over his coffin as hundreds of the footballer's friends and relatives gathered for his funeral today.

Mourners arrived wearing "Emi" number 9 shirts in tribute to the Cardiff City striker, before his coffin was carried out from his childhood club for a private cremation.

The footballer, who was killed aged 28 in a plane crash along with pilot David Ibbotson, is being laid to rest at a service in Argentina today.

His sister, Romina, wept as her brother's body was moved from his first club this afternoon, San Martin de Progreso, where he played until he was 15.

The star's dad, Horacio, cried and looked to the skies as he watched his son's coffin emerge into the street, as his mum kissed it before sobbing into the arms of former Nantes teammate Nicolas Pallois.

Pallois helped to carry Sala's coffin to the hearse as hundreds of people came to pay their respects.

Sala's heartbroken aunt, Mirta Taffarel, sobbed earlier today as she said: "I do not understand it.

"I would like to find a responsible person, someone to tell me what has happened, but it only seems that fate led us to this."

Sala had signed for the Bluebirds in a club-record move from Nantes last month, but was killed when the private plane carrying him crash-landed in the English Channel.

His cousin, Martin Gatti, said today he thought the player was "forced" onto the small plane.

He said: "Making him board a plane that was not in good condition, with a pilot who wasn't prepared, alone, at night. Where were the representatives?

"If you happen to be the most important player sold in the history of the club, they could have at least taken care of him, at least they would have taken care of him."

Following the memorial at the club, the striker's body was taken back to the city of Santa Fe for a private crematorium service for family members.

Today fans wore the red and black shirt of their local side, and some hung a banner outside the club which said: "Emi, You'll Never Walk Alone."

The town's 3,500 residents are expected to have queued up to say their farewell to the beloved player.

Emiliano Sala’s sister, Romina, was seen leaving the wake looking heartbroken, with reports saying his mother, Mercedes, had remained in the gym all morning.

Romina has been a devastated public figure throughout this tragedy, travelling to the UK and Guernsey to push for the privately funded search that eventually located the football star.
Ahead of the vigil, she wrote on Facebook this morning: "Tell me it’s a nightmare, Emi, come back please brother. Please. Love you so much."
A neighbour of the footballer's father told reporters: "I believe God needed a number nine up there. Now he has it."
Sala's body was driven from Buenos Aires airport to Progreso, around 334 miles northwest of the Argentine capital, for the service today.
Outside the club where the vigil is being held, fans have put up a banner saying "Emi, nunca caminaras soloa" which means "Emi, you'll never walk alone."

San Martin de Progreso posted an emotional tribute on Facebook earlier this week, saying: "We are waiting for you...like the first day you left but this time to stay with us forever.
"You went and you are an example for everyone. Eternally in our hearts."
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock and chief executive Ken Choo will attend the funeral after flying to his Argentinian home.

IS BELOTTI STILL A €100M RISK WORTH TAKING FOR CHELSEA OR MAN UTD?

The Torino striker became one of the most sought-after frontmen on the planet last season, but is he what Antonio Conte or Jose Mourinho needs now?

“One-season wonder” – a title nobody wants, particularly strikers whose reputation and value rests squarely on their ability to contribute a steady stream of goals.

Unfortunately for the frontmen of the world, their chosen position places them under the brightest of spotlights and under the greatest threat of being written off at the drop of a hat.

At the focal point of an attack, those who make a living out of finding the back of the net take to the field every week knowing that their standing in the eyes of a global audience can shift dramatically between hero and no-hoper.

THE VERY TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN OFTEN ENDURING DROUGHTS IN THE FINAL THIRD WITHOUT BEING BANISHED TO DEEPEST, DARKEST DURHAM.

The point is valid, though, with the picture in a striking sense shifting considerably from one game to the next, never mind year on year and season after season.

Among those currently clinging to a perch towards the top of the attacking pile is Andrea Belotti, with the Torino forward having surged to the summit in 2016-17 amid a flurry of goals and much talk of a €100 million release clause.

On his way to ending the season with 28 goals across all competitions, plenty of interested parties gave serious consideration to tabling a bid which would trigger a potential exit.

Belotti had not quite come from nowhere to become one of the game’s most sought-after assets, but his story was one of rapid rise – with his efforts across one campaign seeing him match his combined total from the previous three.

At 24 years of age, he is now in just his fourth year as a performer in the Italian top-flight, with a place on the books at Serie C outfit AlbinoLeffe occupied as recently as September 2013 – prior to a move to Palermo.

He was reported to be a target for Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan as his breakthrough season came to a close – but a combination of factors led to all eventually looking elsewhere.

Speculation has surfaced again with another window now open, but is Belotti still worth the kind of risk that was considered over the summer?

There is no doubting that he boasts all of the attributes required to be an elite frontman, particularly the physical qualities which often separate the best from the rest amid the blood and thunder of life in the Premier League.

Belotti, though, has seen his standards dip in 2017-18, with niggling knocks doing little to aid his cause.

Injuries will concern interested parties, with Torino having been forced to rule out ligament damage during a current spell on the sidelines, but it is end product on which he will ultimately be judged and any decision on future destinations made.

Having now reached mid-January in the current campaign, Belotti has found the target just four times in Serie A.

To put that return in context, by the same stage last term he had 14 goals to his name – including four headed efforts, compared to none this time around.

He had also contributed three assists (none in 2017-18), created 35 chances (compared to 18 presently), boasted shooting accuracy of 54 per cent (currently 42.86), a conversion rate of 28% (now 9.52) and passing accuracy of 77.66% (which has dipped to 72.79).

Admittedly he had made three more appearances by this point in 2016-17, but there has still been a very obvious wobble – with other numbers across the board seeing him take fewer touches in any given outing, while also getting fewer shots away, which inevitably leads to him working opposition goalkeepers less.

Is he still a €100m asset?

Torino like to think so, with club president Urbano Cairo having told Radio Rai: “It’s the market that dictates the prices. If [Philippe] Coutinho is sold for €160m then perhaps, if Belotti goes back to doing what he usually does, [his release clause] will be low.”

France Footbal l’s annual awards ceremony in Paris.

The Argentine turnip was chosen unanimously by the journalists who comprise the prize’s voters, many of whom have spent years watching him stumble about attempting to put one foot in front of the other and usually failing.

Messi was ceremoniously presented with the ‘Ballon de Merde’ prize to jeers from the attendees, who booed every mention of his name and showered him with rotten fruit while yelling sarcastic remarks about his height.

"I am suitably humbled by this prize,” said the 31-year old Barcelona liability. “I wouldn’t be here without my team-mates, who are so much better than me that they throw my incompetence into even starker relief.

“I will try to be better next year, but I doubt that will be possible due to my irredeemable lack of talent.
France Football editor-in-chief Pascal Ferré said: “Lionel’s crapness is instinctive. Other players have to work for many years to be half as bad as him. He is a truly a shining example to all young players of what not to be.
“Truly, we are all cursed to be watching football in the Leo Messi era.”

Leaving the stage, Messi tripped over his shoelaces and fell from the podium onto his face, further demonstrating that the voters had made the correct decision.

Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea, on Saturday matched the record for number of saves in a Premier League game.

De Gea made 14 saves against Arsenal, as they won 3-1 at the Emirates.

He now shares top billing with Tim Krul’s 14 in Newcastle’s 1-0 win at Tottenham in November 2013, as the most saves made by a goalkeeper in Premier League history.

No goalkeeper has made more in a single Premier League fixture in history.

The Spain international, who came close to leaving for Real Madrid some years ago, only conceded Alexandre Lacazette’s goal, after Aaron Ramsey beat the offside trap.

De Gea denied Lacazette, Alexis Sanchez and Hector Bellerin, as the Gunners 12-match unbeaten home run ended.

Jesse Lingard (twice) and Antonio Valencia netted for the Red Devils, in what was an entertaining clash.

“I told him after the match that what I saw today was the best goalkeeper in the world,” United manager Jose Mourinho said afterwards.

“Big matches need goalkeepers to be there for you, when the team needs them, but I think [from] all of our players, the effort was magnificent.”

Manchester United came from a goal to beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday, December 5, sinking the Russian side's hopes of qualifying for the next round of the tournament.

Two goals in the space of two second-half minutes from star forward Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford handed United the deserved victory, sealing top spot in Group A.

The visitors opened the scoring in the tie through Victor Vitinho in the 44th minute, amid protestation from United players that he was offside.

Lukaku equalized for the hosts in the 64th minute after Pogba clipped in a lovely ball from the left, finding the Belgian who held off Vasin to slot home from six yards.

Rashford gave United the lead two minutes later after Mata looped a dainty pass over to the Englishman who netted a low shot.

CSKA Moscow needed a draw and a Basel slip up against Benfica to stand any chance of qualifying for the round of 16.

However, the loss in the hands of United, and Basel's 2-0 comfortable win against Benfica saw CSKA Moscow crash out of the competition.

After the win, the excited Super Eagles players dropped their reactions on social media platforms. “So proud of the boys #Super Eagles @NGSuperEagles,” defender William Troost-Ekong wrote on Twitter. “Nigeria four, Argentina 2 naso naso,” the defender is heard saying in a video he shared on his Twitter. Gernot Rohr for the first time tried out the three-man defence system and Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi admitted that they initially struggled with. “We played a new system today we never played before so we struggled to find our feet in the first half but at the break, the coach spoke to us and we corrected our mistakes which helped us to fight back. Our team is still work in progress,” Mikel is quoted to say by the Super Eagles Twitter account. “First time in a Formation of such, Tough first half but we came out strong and everyone sacrificed for each other to come out with such a great result.. I’m really proud of the efforts. God is good.God bless Nigeria,” midfielder John Ogu said on his Twitter. “Amazing come back and great teamwork. Barcelona’s under-fire president Josep Maria Bartomeu launched acounter-attack on his critics on Tuesday by insisting a four-year contract extension for Lionel Messi has been signed by the player’s agentand father, Jorge Horacio Messi.

Burnley defeat Chelsea 3-2 at Stamford Bridge

Reigning Premier League champions Chelsea on Saturday, August 12, 2017 began the defense of their title on a disastrous note after losing 2-3 to Burnley in-front of their faithfuls. No one would believe that Burnley would provide such an astonishing performance at Stamford Bridge as many Chelsea fans left the Stadium livid. But the trouble began for the Blues when Gary Cahill was red carded after committing a rough foul on Steven Defour in which the referee had no choice than to send him out.

Burnley however changed their tactics after Cahillwas sent off and it paid off in the 24th minutes when Sam Vokes netted the first goal after a wonderful cross from Mathew Lowton.Frenchman N'Golo Kante had a chance to equalize for the Blues in the 29th minutes after being wonderfully set up by former Arsenal captainCesc Fabregas, but he was unable to beat Burnley goalie Heaton.

Stephen Ward scored the second goal for Watford in the 39th minutes before Sam Vokes netted his second goal of the match in the 43rd minutes as both side went to the break with the visitors leading. Spanish international Alvaro Morata came from the bench to score the first goal for the Blues in the 69th minutes before David Luiz netted at the death as the match ended 3-2 in favor of Burnley.
