Anambra Central: A-Court orders INEC to conduct re-run poll within 90 days

By Destiny Chisom

ABUJA – The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, on Monday, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a re-run election for Anambra Central Senatorial District within 90 days. A three-member panel of the court headed by Justice Tinuade Akomolafe Wilson, gave the order while delivering judgment in a suit that was filed by the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and its candidate, Chief Victor Umeh. Umeh and his party filed the appeal to challenge the February 29 verdict of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which ordered the inclusion of Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Senator Uche Ekwenife in the Anambra Central Senatorial re-run poll.
It will be recalled that Anambra Central Senatorial seat has remained vacant since Ekwunife’s election was nullified. The Anambra State Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal sitting in Awka had in their concurrent judgments, nullified the election that produced Ekwunife as Senator for the district in 2015, on the premise that she was not validly nominated.
Both the tribunal and the appellate court directed INEC to conduct fresh re-run election in the district.
Dissatisfied with the verdicts, Ekwunife who was formerly a member of APGA before she defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, took the case to the Supreme Court for redress.
In a verdict on February 10, the apex court struck out Ekwunife’s appeal.
In an unanimous judgment, a five-man panel of Justices of the apex court led by Justice Tanko Mohammed, also gave INEC, the nod to conduct a re-run election for the Senatorial district.
However, INEC anchored delay in conduct of the poll on other pending litigations involving the parties, one of which was disposed-off by the appellate court on Monday.
Delivering the lead verdict on Umeh and APGA’s appeal against Ekwunife’s inclusion as candidate of the PDP, Justice Akomolafe held: “Where a court nullifies an election and orders a fresh election, a political party which participated in the annulled election at whose instance the election was nullified cannot field a new candidate to contest in the fresh election.
“This is because the fresh election does not entail an entirely new process; rather it takes the place of the annulled election, because the period of nomination of candidates has lasped.”
Justice Akomolafe held that it was not the case of the 1st respondent (PDP) at the trial court that it be allowed to substitute a candidate for Ekwenife who had defected from the PDP, but for the “erroneous notion that the court-ordered election scheduled by INEC for March 5, 2016, entailed an entirely new process whereby it is entitled to conduct fresh primaries and nominate a new candidate.”
The judge said it was unfortunate that the trial judge fell into a grave error by predicating her judgment on the ground that Ekwenife defected from the PDP.
“On the whole, having resolved the main issue in this appeal in favour of the appellant, this appeal is meritorious and it is allowed. The decision of the trial Federal High Court delivered on 29 February, 2016, is hereby set aside. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) (2nd respondent, is ordered to conduct a fresh election in Anambra Senatorial District within 90 days from today with the participation of the appellants (Chief Victor Umeh and APGA).
“The 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th respondents shall pay the sum of N50, 000 each to the appellants,” the appellate court held.

From results gathered Tony Nwoye of APC came second with 79,885 votes,  Oseloka Obaze took third with 60,967 votes and Osita Chidoka of UPP  fourth with 7,746 votes.

Read his Speech bellow:
Time to Build a New World
Being the text of the Acceptance Speech by the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano on his Re-election as the Governor of Anambra State on Sunday, November 19, 2017 Ndi b’ anyi, ekenem unu
With utmost humility, I stand before you to accept the historic mandate you have bestowed on me today!
Umu nnem, the victory we savour today belongs neither to Willie Obiano nor to our great party, APGA. No! This sweet victory belongs to Ndi Anambra!
It belongs to the wheel barrow pushers and the Okada riders who have clearly seen in our recent political experience, a glimmer of light in the horizon.

It belongs to the farmers in Ayamelum, Onono, Ogbaru, Omasi, Omor and Ufuma who have now realized that Agriculture is the future of Nigeria.
It belongs to the teachers and civil servants who have seen that a motivated workforce is the greatest asset of any government and have rewarded our faith in them with an overwhelming verdict at the polls.
It belongs to the illustrious sons and daughters of Anambra State who have seen the STAR of this great state rise in the Eastern Skies and have answered our call for Aku luo uno; bringing home their Naira and Dollars to put our dear state on the investment map!
This victory belongs to all of us! Umu nnem, this victory isnot a winner takes it all. For in the New Anambra of my dream, everyone is a winner. Everyone!
So, I reach out a hand of brotherhood to my fellow contestants…Oseloka, Tony, Osita, Godwin and others whose names I cannot easily recall here. And I say to you;my brothers, we have all fought a good fight. But Anambra State is the WINNER!
The interest of AnambraState is bigger than the private ambitions of anyone of us.. Therefore, I pray you to join hands with me and build a better place for Ndi Anambra! Our beloved state needs our talent and our time. The time to build a better place is NOW!
Indeed, this victory is a referendum on the solid resolve of Ndi Anambra to rise above average in all we do. We have demonstrated that we are indeed capable of taking charge of our lives and making difficult decisions that will brighten the future of our children. I have no doubt in my mind that we shall continue to lay the building blocks for a prosperous tomorrow for all.
Ndi Anambra, this mandate is dear to my heart. I see it as a historic call to inspire my people to greatness. I see it as a call to deny myself sleep that my people might sleep better. Umu nnem, I will not give myself rest until our beloved state has fully assumed the status of the model state of Nigeria. This is my promise to you all.
Fellow compatriots, this victory did not come by chance. It is the final product of the combined efforts of brilliant men and women who sacrificed their personal comfort to ensure that Anambra’s steady march to progress is not derailed.
My first and deepest gratitude goes to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President MuhammaduBuhari for proving to Ndi Anambra that under his watch, democracy will sink deeper roots in the Nigerian soil. Mr President promised us a free and fair election. Today, we can all see that he has kept his promise. Thank you so much Mr President!
I must also thank the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting what has been widely adjudged a transparent election in Anambra State. With this election, INEC has shown that it has fully braced up for the 2019 elections. Thank you so much.
I will also not forget the vigilance of the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Army and other law enforcement agencies whose alertness ensured that the expressed will of the people was not thwarted. Indeed, you have done an incredible job!
To the indefatigable DG of my re-election campaign organization, Chief Victor Umeh, Ibobo Aguleri, Ohamadike! You and the entire Campaign Team have written your names in gold. My immense gratitude goes to every member of APGA, from the Ward Chairman to the members of the National Executive Council; you have made us proud! Chukwu gozie unu nine.
And to all the members of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, all the PGs and members of the various town unions across Anambra State, all the Bishops, Reverend Fathers and Pastors, the members of the organized Labour, the youths of Anambra State, the traders, the farmers, the ordinary men and women who look up to government for a better day, I assure you that my team and I shall never fail you.
Indeed, Ndi Anambra, on behalf of my capable Deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke, I thank you all for renewing this mandate and I urge you to prepare for the speedy transformation of Anambra State into a prosperous sub-national entity in the next four years.
Umu nnem, we have stepped into our finest hour. We have finally hit the proverbial bend in the river. Our journey into greatness is now assured. We are ready and willing to work with anyone who has something to share that will make Anambra State great.
We are open to new ideas, new visions of society and a New Hope!
God bless Anambra State
God bless Nigeria

POLLING UNITS RESULTS COLLATED

Anambra election –

Strong politicians from different political parties, Saturday, won their respective polling units in the Anamber governorship election.
Home of the late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu‎, despite his son’s defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA won Umudim central school polling units.
Result from the three polling units in the primary school indicated‎ that APGA scored 261 votes, APC 98 and PDP 80.
Emeka Ojukwu Jnr was absent at the polling unit, but late Ojukwu’s widow, Bianca Ojukwu was present at the venue and said she would follow the result of the election to ‎its conclusion.
‎Posters of APC candidate, Tony Nwoye, his running mate, Ikedife with Ojukwu’s picture inserted, littered in front of Ojukwu’s family house in Nnewi.
At Aguluzoigbo in Aniocha LGA, home of the former National Chairman of the Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, in the votes counted at Uzuanunu polling unit in Aguluzoigbo‎ ward, APGA scored 68, APC 8, PDP 1 and NCP 1.
Umeh said he expects the votes margin to be wider in the rest polling units. “We insist the INEC should maintain what happened here in the day time to also take place at night when the rest of the results will be collected,” Umeh said.
He commended INEC and security agents for ‎maintaining peace, adding that the election went well, except the initial hitch when few card readers malfunctioned but were resolved.
At Ekwueme hall polling units of Ukpo, Dunukofia LGA, home of Prince Arthur Eze and the sponsor of the APC Candidate, the APC scored 409 votes, APGA 102 and PDP 15.
Minister for Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige in his home, Nkwoide ward 1 consolidated his stronghold with is party, the APC scoring 152, APGA 68 and PDP 22.
At the Nneofor hall polling unit in Otolo-Nnewi ward an agent of the APC ‎allegedly attempted to snatch uncounted ballot box which brought about scuffle.
The incident caused commotion as supporters of other political parties resisted the attempt.
Security agents on the ground arrested the agent and sent him out of the polling unit.
Former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr Dozie Ikedife whose son is running mate in APC, commended the idea of voting immediately after accreditation‎.
He said it was an improvement in the electoral process, adding that even the IPOB threat did not work much.
Ikedife alleged there were inducements in pockets of areas but gave the election a pass mark.

He however demanded that polling booths should be made more secrete that were experienced, noting that some people watched others vote.

Ojukwu Jnr joins APC, dumps APGA

Mr Emeka Ojukwu Jnr, son of the founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).Ojukwu jnr made his declaration on Wednesday in Awka, at the grand finale campaign of the APC candidate for the Anambra 2017 governorship election, Dr Tony Nwoye. President Muhammadu Buhari, APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, 12 APC governors, National Assembly members in the party, among other party big wigs, witnessed the event. According to him, his decision to join the party was to protect the interest of the Igbos. Ojukwu jnr, who was adorned in a toga of his new party, said it was time for the people of the South-East region to move from “the recession of the periphery to the centre.”“It is time to leave the shadows for light. Every now and then, they come out with my father’s shadow to confuse the people,” he said. According to him, APGA is a means to an end but not an end itself. He said the reason why his father joined the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the Second Republic was to ensure that Igbo people remained in the mainstream of Nigerian politics. “Mr President, I am proud to stand here today in support of you and in solidarity with the APC and our candidate, Tony Nwoye,” he added. The APC national chairman presented the party symbol to him and described the rally as “another historic campaign.”Oyegun recalled that Buhari made history when he unseated the incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, saying that the same feat would be achieved in Anambra 2017 governorship election. The national chairman urged the people of the state to vote en mass for the party and Nwoye at the Saturday poll.

Nigeria 4 Vs Argentina 2 Super Eagles players react on social media

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have come on social media to react to their thrilling comeback win over Argentina in a friendly on Tuesday, November 14.  Nigeria came back from 2-0 down to seal a 4-2 win over Argentina at the Stadion FK in Krasnodar, Russia.  After the win, the excited Super Eagles players dropped their reactions on social media platforms. “So proud of the boys #Super Eagles @NGSuperEagles,” defender William Troost-Ekong wrote on Twitter.  “Nigeria four, Argentina 2 naso naso,” the defender is heard saying in a video he shared on his Twitter.   Gernot Rohr for the first time tried out the three-man defence system and Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi admitted that they initially struggled with.  “We played a new system today we never played before so we struggled to find our feet in the first half but at the break, the coach spoke to us and we corrected our mistakes which helped us to fight back. Our team is still work in progress,” Mikel is quoted to say by the Super Eagles Twitter account.   “First time in a Formation of such, Tough first half but we came out strong and everyone sacrificed for each other to come out with such a great result.. I’m really proud of the efforts. God is good.God bless Nigeria,” midfielder John Ogu said on his Twitter. “Amazing come back and great teamwork. We prepared well for the game and started with a new formation. We deserved to win!”Shehu Abdullahi said.  “Thank you Krasnodar, we had amazing memories to savour. Thank you Nigerians for the massive support always.  “We won this together! Victory for us!”   “Algeria on Friday was solid already. But today is kind of historical coming back like this from a 0-2 vs Argentina. Considering the fact that we played like that system for the 1st time makes it even greater!! Up up Super eagles, up up Nigeria,” Leon Balogun said.   Rohr is happy with the way he men responded from 2-0 down to win the game.  “I am happy we came back from 2 goals down to win 4-2. It shows we have great team spirit and determination when you keep fighting after going two goals down against a great team like Argentina,” Rohr is quoted to say by the Super Eagles Twitter account.   “It's good victory for us but it doesn’t mean we’ve become favourites to win the World Cup. We stay humble & realize we have more work to do.  “We prepared well for this game because playing Argentina is big for us, maybe it is different for them.”  The Super Eagles of Nigeria will leave Krasnodar tonight.
